Night had fallen when the truck of the Ninth Wave arrived at the location of the massacre. Among the victims were two men in the cab and 14 women with two boys in the back of the truck.  The driver, seeing the scattered corpses, tried to escape at high speed. This alerted the women who had been singing after a long day’s work and then unwittingly began to scream at seeing the dead, thus alerting the recumbent soldiers resting at the school well. The soldiers then ran after the truck that had nearly escaped, shot its tires and gas tank, and stopped it. Safa Sarsour, having just seen her 16-year-old son, Jum’a, dead on the side of the road, now witnessed her second son, 14-year-old Abdallah along with the men, being lined up and shot dead in front of her eyes. The women, one pregnant, some elderly, and some girls, pleaded for their lives. The only survivor was Hana Amer, 15  years old, who said that the women clung to each other for protection. Even the two girls who had managed to escape returned to the circle. As they were being shot, the women held hands and rotated as one big group and one by one they fell. The soldiers continued shooting into their heads to ensure their death.

Mahmoud and his uncle Yousef Sarsour were returning home in a truck loaded with cement blocks. They were unaware of the curfew but knew well the cruelties of military rule. They were stopped by soldiers who had positioned themselves dozens of meters west of the scene of their previous assault. Even so, the two villagers could see the previous horrors when ordered to get out of the truck. They resisted but the soldiers pulled them out forcibly and shot them both dead.

When Israeli soldiers showered bullets on the workers of the Seventh Wave, many fell to the ground desperately seeking shelter. Some tried to hide under the truck itself. Abu Ayyoub managed to squeeze his young body over the spare wheel under the truck. He told of how in due time all those under the truck were shot and their bodies pulled out, but he remained hidden. Of the Israeli soldiers, he said, “When they finished, they sat resting their backs on the truck's rear and were so close that I could have extended my hand and touched their backs. They were smoking and laughing.” Later, when the soldiers had moved on to the next killing event, one worker, Abu Fareed, who had escaped, returned. Wanting but unable to squeeze next to Abu Ayyoub, he curled himself up near a rear wheel. The soldiers eventually found and killed him.

When the village crier announced the curfew less than 30 minutes in advance, two children, eight-year-old Riyad Dahoud and 11 year old Jamal Taha, were sent to inform their kin. Thus, the workers of the Seventh Wave of killing knew of the curfew in advance. After some indecision and a lot of walking, the workers found and persuaded the truck driver, Ata Sarsour, to take them home even though he did not have a permit to transport passengers. When they were nearly home Israeli soldiers carrying submachine guns stopped the truck and forced the workers into a line. After the first shower of bullets the workers all fell to the ground. Raja Dahoud, it was said, was bringing his son Riyad down from the truck when the shooting began. Riyad died. The other child, Jamal, not having been hit, raised his head asking his wounded brother if he was alive, at which point a soldier shot him twice in the head. His brother Abdal-Raheem said, “Jamal hugged my waist with all his ebbing might and died.” Of the 19 workers, ten died immediately, many were wounded, while some managed to run away.

It was late evening and very dark on the night of the massacre when at gun point the Israeli soldiers forced 13 or more workers to line up on one side of the road. They had arrived singly and in groups on bicycles and one mule drawn wagon. First to arrive and be shot was 17 year old Saleh Easa with his two cousins. They had heard about the curfew and only feared a beating. They were hoping one particularly nasty soldier who always terrorized them would not be among those awaiting them. When ten more workers had been gathered and lined near the fallen Saleh and his cousins, an execution-style shooting began. The mostly young workers sprinted in all directions. Six died. Saleh, one of the five wounded, pretending to be dead, was dragged to the pile of corpses. He remained quiet, gritting his teeth in spite of extreme pain, when the soldiers drove the wagon’s metal lined wheels over his foot. As he lay still he witnessed the rest of the massacre and later crawled to safety.

Of the 43 men, women, and children who would die at the western entrance to the village, six men and a boy had already been shot dead and many wounded when the truck of the Fifth Wave arrived, bringing home the driver and five passengers. The Israeli Border Police tried to stop them in advance of the spot where earlier killing had taken place. But having heard gunfire before arriving, the driver took off at high speed in spite of the rain of bullets. In the back of the truck, Mahmoud Rayyan stood up to see what was going on, and was shot dead. As the truck sped away, passengers could see the first three victims of the Sixth Wave arriving on bicycles and being shot.

A jeep full of Israeli soldiers was chasing the truck of the Fourth Wave. Suddenly, just after Saleh Amer, who had tried to get onto the moving truck was shot dead, old man Abu Mousa ran into the path of the jeep yelling, “Where are my sons? Where are my sons?” By doing so he had risked his life and broken the curfew. The truck driver took advantage of the interruption, sped away and saved the lives of all those riding the truck.

The truck of the Fourth Wave was stopped at the side of the road by order of the armed Israeli soldiers. It was full of terrified workers who had seen the bodies of the dead from the previous events and had just witnessed the killing of the shepherd boy and his father. They were sure they would be killed next and some prepared themselves by praying. When the truck began to leave, followed by the jeep full of armed soldiers, Saleh Amer, who had been returning home on foot, tried to jump onto the truck for safety. But the soldiers in the jeep shot him dead. Suddenly, an old man, Abu Mousa, ran in front of the jeep. The driver of the truck, Abdallah Easa, seeing the jeep delayed, bravely took the opportunity to escape and madly drove to safety, thus saving the lives of 23 workers. At their destination they all rushed inside one small house leaving the motor running and the headlights on. An hour later one worker carefully sneaked out and turned them both off. Inside the house they found sacks of wheat which they used to barricade the door, fully expecting to be pursued inside and killed. They remained thus barricaded for the duration of the two consecutive 24 hour curfews.

Uthman Easa, having heard of the curfew, went out to bring back his 12 year old son, Fathi, who was pasturing a herd of black goats. On the way back, soldiers attacked them. Uthman was driving the large herd from the rear when suddenly the goats reversed direction and stampeded toward him. In frantically trying to hold them back, he may not have realized that his son leading the herd had been killed. Witnesses in the truck of the next wave, now temporarily stopped on the side of the road, saw that as the herd dispersed, he too was shot and killed.

The 12 year old shepherd boy Fathi Easa was leading his family’s herd of black goats home after pasture while his father, Uthman, was shooing them from the rear. The father having learned of the curfew had rushed out to help his son drive the flock home. As they approached the School road, Israeli soldiers confronted them. There were three weapons in their hands and all were aimed at the boy: the semi-automatic Uzi and Bren, as well as a rifle. All were fired and the boy collapsed and died.

It was evening and Mahmoud Bdier, 14 years old, was returning home, walking next to the cart of his paternal uncle, Isma’eel Bdier, who was driving while his eight-year-old daughter, Radiyya, sat in the back. Accompanying the cart were several others, including Abu Samaha, 50 years old, who was riding a donkey, and Ghazi Easa, who was 20 years old, carrying vegetables. All were heading home anticipating dinner, rest, and the daily curfew to begin at 9:00 p.m. Suddenly, soldiers of the Israeli Border Police stopped them and showered them with bullets. Abu Samaha and Ghazi died immediately while Isma’eel was heavily wounded but survived. The children, Mahmoud with his cousins, Muhammad and Radiyya, kept walking along and thus saw the corpses from the previous wave as well as the subsequent killings of the Third and Fourth Waves before reaching safety.

Abdallah Bdier was shot at when bicycling home after work with his brother and two comrades in the First Wave of killing at the western entrance to the village. He immediately fell to the ground and pretended to be dead. When he first tried to crawl away, he was shot at again, and again he remained still. Later he took the opportunity to escape the killing area by crawling between a few of the black goats scattered during the Third Wave of killing. It was getting darker by then and this helped camouflage him.

Five minutes before the curfew and unaware of it, four quarry workers were returning home to Kafr Qasem riding their bicycles. When confronted by Israeli soldiers with whose harassment they were familiar, they dismounted and reached for their identity cards. Instead, an order to “harvest them” was given. Two of them, 35 years old Ahmad Freij and 30 year old Ali Taha, fell mortally wounded and died immediately. Both were fathers of young children. The two others, Mahmoud Freij, Ahmad’s brother, and Abdallah Bdier, managed to escape. Mahmoud was wounded in the thigh and crawled to an olive tree and hid until morning.

In the northern fields of the village, three shepherd boys were out watering the family’s flock of sheep not knowing that Israel had launched a surprise attack on Egypt just hours before, nor were they aware of the curfew imposed on their village. Ibraheem Easa, their uncle who was 35 years old, had learnt of the curfew and left the safety of his home to bring them back. They returned immediately with grown-up Ibraheem leading the flock. The two boys, Abed and Abdallah, nine and 15  years old, were just behind him while the third boy, Sami Mustafa, was watching the rear of the herd. Israeli soldiers of the Border Police stopped them and immediately shot and killed Ibraheem, Abed, and Abdallah. Sami saw them being shot and fell to the ground pretending to be dead and survived.

In the second part of the exhibition, the artist will present three recently completed acrylic paintings of her project Illuminated Space: Between Birzeit and Ramallah, To Return: Infiltrate, and Mondrian Boogie Woogie.  critic Maymana Farahat sheds light on the Artist’s recent paintings & reviews them within broader frame of history of modern painting.
To Return, Infiltrate exemplifies how color relativity can be used to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface, as cool tones are evenly distributed in vertical brushstrokes across the composition and solid squares appear to float in mid air over a shimmering sea of color. The title of the work suggests that the suspended shapes are shown approaching a densely structured environment yet return in mass, ready to infiltrate.

Mountains Between recalls the loosely painted color fields of her early 1960s canvases while also incorporating some of the tonal variations that characterize her cutout collages. In the context of Palestine, this atmospheric work evokes a fog-covered scene where shadows fall over landforms on a crisp winter morning.
