Laila Shawa

Laila Shawa is a Palestinian artist born in Gaza 1940, Her work has been described as reflecting a view of the politics of her country highlighting perceived injustices and persecution. Often her work uses photographs that are used as the base for silkscreen printing. Her work has been internationally exhibited and has work on display in many public (e.g. The British Museum) and private collections.

Indications of Loss and Hope

The death and destruction brought upon the Palestinians during the second Intifada and during the Israeli incursions after the year 2000, had also impacted the representation of women in art, where images of loss and agony prevailed. Other works however transcended that sense of loss, demonstrating signs of hope, energy and continued defiance.
